Roaming allows you to use your cellphone while you are away from home. If you registered your mobile in your hometown, you can still use it when you travel, but you might have to pay additional roaming charges.

Although it is great to be able to use your mobile away from home, the roaming fees are usually quite high. If you are not careful, you might end up spending a lot of money without realizing it. However, there are ways to keep using your cellphone while traveling and avoid or at the very least minimize roaming fees.

The first thing you should do if you have an iPhone or similar device is to turn off data roaming. On the iPhone, this can be done by going to Settings -> General -> Network and switching data roaming to off. By doing this, you will be alerted every time your cellphone might need to rely on roaming and it will remind you that allowing roaming might cost you.

Another perhaps more efficient solution would be to rely on a VoIP provider. Since you would be calling through your VoIP provider instead of your mobile provider, you would completely avoid any roaming fees. You would still need a data plan and you might pay slightly more in some cases, but it is far better than the regular roaming fees.
