Those uninitiated to VoIP may have some questions or concerns about the service. Is VoIP worthwhile? How will a VoIP system help me? What do I need for a VoIP phone? What is VoIP, anyway? To answer these questions, let’s return to the basics.

What is VoIP?

The term “VoIP” stands for “Voice over Internet Protocol.” In other words, a VoIP phone is a phone that works over the Internet.

What do you need?

A VoIP phone functions like a traditional phone, only over the Internet. You will need a phoning device such as a softphone or a VoIP phone.  A softphone is a program that runs on devices such as computers, tablets or smartphones. These applications allow your device to make VoIP calls when connected to the Internet. A VoIP phone is simply a home or office phone that supports VoIP calls.

You will also need a package with a VoIP provider. Acquiring a VoIP plan is no different than acquiring a plan with a traditional provider.

Lastly, you will need an Internet connection. Since VoIP calls are made through the Internet, you must be connected to an Internet network to make calls.

How will it help you?

A VoIP system offers a number of benefits that traditional telephony doesn’t. These include:

  • Reduced cost: A VoIP system can reduce your phone bills by up to 50%
  • New and Enhanced features: Many features are either enhanced on VoIP, or unique to it. Such features include call holding, conference calls, voicemail sent to email, call forwarding, etc.
  • No hardware: There is no hardware required for a VoIP system. Businesses can own a VoIP phone system without paying for hardware installation and maintenance thanks to a hosted PBX.
  • More flexibility: With a VoIP phone system, you can make VoIP calls from anywhere. Your system offers more freedom and avoids geographical restrictions.

And that covers the basics of VoIP. Do you have any comments or questions? Leave a comment below, or visit us on our Facebook page.
