LAW 25

Modernisation of legislative provisions regarding the protection of personal information.

In force since 22 septembre 2023, this law imposes rigorous frameworks for the management of digital data in Quebec.

01. Governance

Mandatory designation of a person responsible for the protection of personal information.

02. Assessment

Completion of Privacy Impact Assessments (PIA) for new technology.

03. Transparency

Mandatory reporting of confidentiality incidents to the Commission d'acces a l'information (CAI) within 72 hours.

04. Consent

Requirement to obtain explicit consent for the collection of personal data.

LAW 101

CHARTER OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE

Law 101 (Charter of the French Language), strengthened by Bill 96 in June 2022, establishes French as the official language of Quebec, with phased implementation through 2025.

  • French is the official language of Quebec - All business communications must first be drafted in French.
  • Companies with 25 or more employees must register with the OQLF and follow a francisation process.
  • All contracts, invoices, and marketing materials must be in French. English versions are allowed, but French must be clearly predominant (at least twice as visible as any other language).
  • Fines of up to CAD 30,000 per violation apply in cases of non-compliance.
